My brother Peter has been turning me on to The Residents recently. I'd known about them and heard a few songs, but I didn't know how broad a range of musical styles they covered. They were perhaps best known for never showing their faces, usually wearing eyeball masks over their heads. They're still around. Definitely fringe stuff, but worth checking out.

Here's a funny cover of Satisfaction. To me, it sounds like Mick Jagger to the Mick Jagger:

Here's another, Mr Skull's rave. which starts with Jephthah's daughter from Judges 11- watch at least till 2:30 to get the idea:

Here's some more recent work (2008), the Gingerbread Man:

Weird but fun.

Whateverman just jogged my memory about this great Zappa song/video....

EDIT: just had to add this, Frank's orchestral arrangements were totally unique... hadn't listened to this in many years, it was a real joy.... thanks, WEM! :)

the weirdest thing about listening to this album again was that i could recite every lyric from memory

I am loving this. I think there may indeed be hope for the future.

Does anyone else like Dead Can Dance?

If so, they're streaming their new album on their website: http://deadcandance.com/ and there's also a free track from it to download. From http://www.deadcandance.com/main/news-2/ there's two free live EPs to download.

If you've no idea who they are or what they sound like, then I humbly submit the followin description stolen, Comfort-style, from Wikipedia:

Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance as having an ambient style of world music that "constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty; African polyrhythms, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chants, Middle Eastern mantras, and art-rock."

Listened to the new one for the first time this morning. Not sure yet, but dare say it'll get its hooks in soon enough.
