How to...?

A place for members to help other members with questions about how to navigate the forums, how to post, ect. Feel free to make suggestions here as well.

Yes, we can all read the FAQ, but sometimes the question either isn't covered or it just makes more sense coming from a fellow member.

How to...?

Postby Tilia » Fri Dec 19, 2008 8:05 pm

I don't know if this exists somewhere else, but I'd like a place where we can sum up some technical questions. It never hurts to check the FAQs (I just found out why HTML doesn't work here), but sometimes your question isn't that frequent and maybe somebody else knows the answer.

For now, I'd like to know how to insert signs that aren't on my keyboard. Having a German keyboard means that I can write as many Ä's, Ö's, Ü's and ß's as I want, but how can I write a Danish ö or a Greek pi? The normal Ascii codes don't work. see: π Π

Usually with Windows you can do it with an Alt + ASCII code command. At least, that's how I would write most of my German/French vowels until I switched to Linux (it doesn't work the same way and I haven't set up the keys properly). You should be able to find the ascii number in the Character Map.

shaggy,
sorry for being stupid. The ascii number for a Danish ö would be 248, but if I type that, nothing happens. The keyboard code (strg+/,o) works in Word but not here.
Copying from Word seems to work for Danish: ø

But there are only unicode numbers for Greek signs and I can't even copy them.

It should work if you do Alt + 0248. Hold down alt and use the number pad to type in the code. It might work.

and finally Tilia found out what the number pad is there for...
Unfortunately I'm working with a notebook without number pad. Well. doesn't matter. I'm not going to write much in Danish anyway ;) . But I'll try that at work.
Thanks, Shaggy.

Hehehe... well, there should also be a function key (Fn or something in a different colour) that lets you use the number pad built into the normal keyboard.

Maybe?

Raytractors helping Raytractors. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy...
"Polymath" means "having learned much"; the correct word for "having failed to learn much" is simply "Ray".

It's the reason for the season. And the three other seasons. And such.
