Yeah, they ended up in an area where they are geologically poor- no natural resources to speak of, so nobody wants the land and they have nothing to offer the world economy.
Then they ended up in a type of time warp- country founded and continuously ruled by a family line of despots that don't give two shits about their people; all the while being protected by China who uses them as a buffer zone.

I think a few floors of the Ryugyong Hotel (Hotel of Doom) are supposed to open this month too... 20 years late.

Yeah. it's a sad story, jim. But to tell the truth- I can't agree that the Ryugyong Hotel is the "ugliest building in the world". As modern skyscrapers go, it's no uglier than most. It's certainly more interesting than the rest of the Pyongyang skyline.
