I have often commented that the unstated truth from the religious right is that they want to do away with government social programs in order to fill their churches, and here is the proof of that. Perkins claims that local churches will take up the slack in protecting the poor and disadvantaged; but what he doesn't say is that, of course, that person will have to be a tithing member of some bullshit church. Add that to the fact that there have been plenty of times when the churches did not have the wherewithal to care for the poor, including the great depression and now as the economy has tanked. Of course, it is obvious that the churches are not stepping up to care for the poor and disavantaged because if they were, we would have no poor or disadvantaged.
The Republican budget cuts are designed, or at least they lead the evangelical leaders to believe, that the cuts will fill the pews, coffers, and influence of the local churches. This is how the Republicans pander to the evangelical vote.
