I try to avoid letting my kids playing "first person shooter" games.

although reading the sites review of Grand Theft Auto IV, I might want to play it myself for kicks.

My 8 y.o is probably a tad better skills-wise than I am at the COD games. His reflexes are obviously faster and he is a better shot. I'd say I am still tactically and strategically better than he is. In my defence, I've been playing computer games for the best part of 30 years so I'm no slouch.

I had some qualms about letting him play the COD games but he seems mature enough to understand that the violence, while graphic, is obviously not real. He's a serious history buff so he is well aware of the disgusting things that people have done to each other for millenia.
